PEMEX (Petróleos Mexicanos) Refinery, Mexico
As part of a large land reclamation, Wicks executed Surface Compaction for a new refinery in Mexico. With the compaction, future settlements will be reduced and liquefaction in case of earth quake will be prevented.
The new refinery in the Port of Dos Bocas, Tabasco, will be one of the main projects to help to achieve Mexico’s energy independence. The refinery will be built on a 600 hectares plot of land, which has been freshly reclaimed.
Some 400 hectares of the reclamation needed compaction. For the shallow sand layers of up to 5 meters, Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) was applied to compact the sand layers. Wicks’ 9 ton compaction hammers proved very efficient to meet the compaction requirements.
As the fast track project was under a very tight time schedule, the specialized compaction equipment was mobilized to the project in a short time. The compaction hammers worked around the clock to complete the works as per the stringent planning required by the customer.
